Extractant efficiency in the solubilization of alternative sources of potassium Agronomy
Reis, Daniele Nogueira dos; van Straaten, Peter; Furtini Neto, Antonio Eduardo; Bittar, Sheila Maria Bretas; Curi, Nilton.
Knowledge of a rock’s composition allows for inferences regarding several properties, ranging from its physical characteristics to its solubility. This study aimed to evaluate the use of different extractants to solubilize the K present in rocks as a potential source of nutrients and the effects of extractant contact time and temperature on rock solubilization. Samples of two rocks and a mineral concentrated from a granitic rock were treated with ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (NH4(H2PO4)), calcium dihydrogen phosphate (Ca(H2PO4)2), sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and water (control). Sample-extractant treatments were performed using a water bath shaker at temperatures of 25 and 50°C for periods of 3, 7, 10, 20, and 30 days. The amounts of K extracted from rocks...

Iron oxide deposits associated with the ectosymbiotic bacteria in the hydrothermal vent shrimp Rimicaris exoculata ArchiMer
Corbari, L; Cambon-bonavita, Marie-anne; Long, G; Grandjean, F; Zbinden, M; Gaill, F; Compere, P.
The Rimicaris exoculata shrimp is considered as a primary consumer that dominates the fauna of most Mid-Atlantic Ridge ( MAR) hydrothermal ecosystems. These shrimps harbour in their gill chambers an important ectosymbiotic community of chemoautotrophic bacteria associated with iron oxide deposits. The structure and elemental composition of the mineral concretions associated with these bacteria have been investigated by using LM, ESEM, TEM STEM and EDX microanalyses. The nature of the iron oxides in shrimps obtained from the Rainbow vent field has also been determined by Mossbauer spectroscopy. This multidisciplinary approach has revealed that the three layers of mineral crust in the Rimicaris exoculata shrimps consist of large concretions formed by...

Macro and micro minerals: are frozen fruits a good source? Anais da ABC (AABC)
Spada,Patricia D.S.; Bortolin,Giovana V.; Prá,Daniel; Santos,Carla E.I.; Dias,Johnny F.; Henriques,João A.P.; Salvador,Mirian.
Fruits are rich in minerals, which are essential for a wide variety of metabolic and physiologic processes in the human body. The use of frozen fruits has greatly spread in the last years not only in the preparation of juices, but also as raw material for yogurts, candies, cookies, cakes, ice creams, and children's food. However, up to now there is no data about the mineral profile of frozen fruits. This is the first database to quantify the levels of minerals in 23 samples of frozen fruits, including the most used around the world and some native fruits from the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. Considering the Dietary Reference Intakes, 100g of frozen fruits can provide 0.2 to 2.8% of macro and 2.5 to 100% of microminerals for adults (31-50 years old)....

Minerals and Energy Sources OceanDocs
Salt can be considered as the most widespread mineral in Eastern Africa and its recovery from the sea is a comparatively simple process given certain environmental conditions. The location of solar saltworks is controlled by the rainfall regime and the occurrence of suitable impermeable soils. These conditions occur from Ngomeni northwards to the Lamu area. Extensive saltworks have been established at the Gongoni-Fundi Is area and Kurawa. The total area dedicated to salt production is over 5,000 hectares that yield an average of over 170,000 tonnes of salt annually. The method of salt production utilised by the five established companies is very much the same throughout the area. Seawater is introduced into the ponds which are run in series. Slight...
